Dear Parishioners,
I hope that you are well and healthy.
As the pandemic is still active, we have to continue to adhere to all COVID-19 precautions for our safety and safety for others.
This year Lent and Easter season are soon approaching and it is very important for each one of us to observe Lent entitled by church as a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial. The purpose of observing Lent is to build self-discipline which is the corner stone of spiritual growth. I would like to share my spiritual experience on how to observe the fifty days of Lent.
First, fasting can be a good act, as God is pleased when we repent for our sinful habits and humble ourselves by fasting before Him. The Gospel of St. Mathew 6:16-18 says, “when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face that your fasting may not be seen by others so that no one will know you are fasting, except your Father who sees all that is done in secret and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.”
Secondly, the Lenten season also calls us to recognize that sorrow that leads to true repentance, fosters our transformation into who we really are. This productive sorrow may in fact buoy us amid our sinfulness. It empowers us to become the human beings God created us to be - free, whole, holy, and forgiving, not merely as individuals or for ourselves, but as the collective people of God who live in a spirit of service and love to one another - who “bear one another’s burdens” and fulfill the law of Christ (Gal. 6:2).
