1970s: Even though Catholics from Kerala came to the United States of America during the early 1970s, our own Syro Malabar Diocese was not formed until 2001 with Mar Jacob Angadiath, our first and current Bishop.
1995: On one summer evening in 1995, about 12 catholic families gathered at the residence of Joseph and Lilly Fernandez to form a new forum called the “Kerala Catholic Prayer Group”. Paul V Paul (Teelar) was selected as the first organizer. With the help of visiting priests, the forum organized Malayalam Masses in the living rooms and basements of the member families' homes.
2003: The turning point in the history of Kerala Catholics in the New England Area happened during the visit of Fr. Tomy Kariyilakulam, MCBS, to this area. He, with the assistance of Fr. Raju Muringayil, celebrated a mass for the congregation on April 11, 2003 at the St. Charles Church in Waltham, MA. Fr. Tomy donated his Taksa (Mass book for priests) to the community and he introduced us to Fr. Jose Kandathikkudy, the vicar of the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Church, Bronx, NY, who promised to help organize a monthly Mass.
The parish took on a renewed life and began to prosper under the great leadership of James/Alice Kutticherry, Jose Puthanpurackal, Paul V Paul( Teelar),Shanty Mathew, Lisa Jose, Rajesh Mathew, Biju Jose Thoombil, Smitha Paul, Mary Thomas, Scaria Mathew and Varghese Yohannan and leaders of family units and other nominated members.
We had difficulties in getting a location to hold Mass on Sundays. Mass was celebrated on Saturdays at different locations in Weston and Waltham. We managed to get the Fernald School Chapel for Saturday evening services with the help of Elsie Vithaythil who was the nursing supervisor for the facility.
2004: Several visiting priests and Bishop Simon Stock Palathara assisted in celebrating masses until the arrival of Fr. Varghese Pereppadan. Fr. Varghese Pereppadan continued to celebrate the Liturgy regularly until July 24 th , 2004.
June 12, 2004: We did not become an official organization until His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of St. Thomas Syro Malabar diocese of Chicago conducted the official inauguration of the mission as St.Thomas Syro Malabar Church Boston (SMCB) on June 12, 2004.
On October 23, 2004, we started CCD classes under the leadership of James Kutticherry and Kunjumol Joseph.
On May 23, 2005, we introduced “Family Units” in order to establish stronger relationships among the parish members and to help the growth of the mission.
On March 26, 2006, Fr. Roy Kaduppil, Chancellor of St.Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, introduced Fr. Kuriakose Vadana, who was appointed by His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago to the congregation as the Mission Director.
On May 12 , 2006, Fr. Kuriakose Vadana met the Cardinal along with Mr. James Kutticherry and Sr. Mary Corripio. His Eminence was happy about the new developments in the mission.
