The Mother-Son duo, Teresa Vinitha Francis and Rohan Valantra teamed up to raise chickens in their backyard, early last year when the pandemic struck a heavy blow to their busy lives! Here, they talk about their experiences raising their beloved chickens and how each one is different from the other.
We got interested in raising chickens once the Corona lock down was instated in March 2020. Well, I guess it was something we were interested in. After a lot of research, pondering and lots of feedback from chicken lovers and reading the pros of chicken rearing from the MA-Backyard chicken group, we decided that we will go ahead with the plan. By the time, we bought the chickens from My Pet Chickens and had them delivered it was already August 2020.

Carrying chickens can be tricky!
We started with 6 chickens and we still have 6. The group of 6 includes a pair of Golden Wyandottes, a pair of Black Karans and a pair of Buff Orpingtons. They are almost 6 months old now. They have their individual characteristics. Rohan is their primary caretaker. He interacts with them daily. He feeds them and says hello to them on a regular basis. He calls them by their names and knows them better that way too!

Hello!
Chirp despises getting picked up. Chirp really hates it and likes being alone without the other chickens.
Quick is very chill. Quick doesn't mind getting picked up that much and is one of the nicest chickens.
Speedy falls under the same category as Chirp. Speedy doesn’t mind getting picked up but prefers to be alone.
Corners is very chill and probably our oldest chick since Corners has matured so fast.
Onion Spinach is basically Speedy but with a different name. Onion Spinach got the name Onion Spinach because once she got out and sat down in my moms garden. There we planted Onion and Spinach in the garden, so the chicken got the name Onion Spinach.
Peck is basically Chirp and Speedy combined but just A LOT more mad. Peck basically hates getting picked up and you shouldn’t try and pick her up EVER.
