Dear Parish community,
As we are approaching the next liturgical session, the season of “Lent” plays an important role in forming a spiritual life. I have been hearing from different groups of people asking - Why do we observe “Lent”?, Why do we abstain from food such as meat, fish & eggs? Is it important to practice “Lent” and abstinence from food items?
The western missionaries who visited India in the 16th century have testified to the life of fasting and prayer of the Thomas Christians. They used to abstain from delicious food items like meat, fish, egg, milk, and milk products during the seasons of fasting, which were the twenty-five days before Christmas and fifty days before Easter. They combined fasting with long prayers and alms giving.
The three penitential practices of fasting, prayer, and alms giving correspond in a way to three types of temptation: to the three temptations of Jesus in the Gospel(Luke 4:1-13) and to the three temptations that Eve could not win over as mentioned in Genesis (3:1-13) when she saw that, the forbidden fruit was (a) good to eat, (b) pleasing to the eye, and (c) desirable for gaining wisdom. She mistrusted God and disobeyed Him. The first letter of St. John 2:16 says “For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world".
Our call as a Christian is to be one with Christ and glorify Heavenly Father, but as a human beings, living in this world with Free Will, we face different challenges of the world. So let us read and remember St. Paul’s exhortation to Ephesians, “Put on all the armor that God gives you so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil’s evil tricks" (6:11).
These challenges can be overcome with fasting, constant prayer and alms giving.
Pinto Achan in his Pastoral reflections shares the dynamics of the process of reconciliation within families.

Alice Kutticherry (Alice Aunty) is a long-standing parishioner who has always worked towards establishing and serving our community at Syro Malabar Church Boston. After decades of leadership in various roles, Alice aunty has decided to step down from her role as President of Marian Mothers group. Through the years, many of us have had memorable experiences of working alongside Alice Aunty. Here, we bring you some of those memories!
I am Vinita Denis. I have been a member of SMCB for many years now, along with my husband Denis and daughter Riya, who will be graduating from high school this year. I work at Bank of New York Mellon.
I look forward to this opportunity as the next Marian Mothers group coordinator. The Marian Mothers group has always stood for Rosary devotion meetings, visits to the homeless and service to those in need. I intend to continue to focus in these areas and hope to expand our reach. I hope to work on new projects like Altar restoration, if it is in our Lord's will. As workers in our Lord's Vineyard, let us be grateful for what we have and be mindful of those in need.
In case you feel this is all pray and no play, we also have an Altar flower group and would love to have more volunteers. We generally work after the Saturday Mass of 10am.
Please consider joining Marian Mothers by joining our WhatsApp group, as it makes it easier to reach out for volunteers.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
On January 22, 2022, a joint session of the outgoing and incoming parish council was held.
The joint session was inaugurated by our Vicar Fr. Stephen, with the invocation of the Holy Spirit, as a guide to the councils.
The joint session has been a tradition at our parish during which the outgoing parish council presents the past year's Annual Report for review and shares insights about potential future plans with the incoming council. The incoming council on their part will deliberate over these discussions and plans and continue to do so until their formal presentation to the Annual General Body of the Parish. This tradition is also part of the transition activities between the two councils. This provides an opportunity for the new council to hear about past projects and discuss their plans for the upcoming year.
On January 9th, the SMCB compliance team - Sheela Kaithamattam, Joyce Paul and Don Francis, conducted the second session of the safety training.
48 members in the SMCB community have attended this training so far. If you work directly or indirectly with children and haven't attended the new safety training, please register for the third training at 12 noon, 20th February. If you have any questions, please contact the compliance team at compliance@smcboston.org.
With managing in person classroom protocols, fielding questions from ever curious students and the recent mid term evaluations, the new Catechists have had a busy year so far! Let's get to know them a bit better, find out what inspired them to join the CCD team and what keeps them going!
On January 16th, Don Francis and Paul Mechery conducted training for the children's altar server program.
As announced, SMCB will be conducting a music training program for all current & future students for the English Qurbana Choir or Music Ministry. All students in Grade 6 and up are welcome to attend. In particular, we are in need of more instrumentalists and male vocalists.
