With managing in person classroom protocols, fielding questions from ever curious students and the recent mid term evaluations, the new Catechists have had a busy year so far! Let's get to know them a bit better, find out what inspired them to join the CCD team and what keeps them going!
Princy teaches Grade 4.
My name is Princy Joseph and I am a 4th grade CCD teacher. This is my 1st year teaching CCD. I love teaching and I also believe it is our duty to pass on the faith that we have, to our young generation. Certainly this will help me to deepen my relationship with Jesus.
I live with my husband Marshal and our lovely children Angeleena and Adrian. I am a nurse by profession, currently working as an Infection Control Practitioner at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston.
Rexy teaches Grade 11.
Hello, my name is Rexy Joseph and I am one of the newly minted catechists, if at all there is a way to mint more!! I live in Hopkinton with my wife Anu and two sons Rian and Rohan. I have been part of the community for close to 9 years, though have been a regular for the past 5 years.
One of the reasons for me to join the parish and become more active was the CCD program - giving our sons the very foundations of our faith as well as the ability for them to connect with the community.
At the start of the pandemic when the program went online, I saw Anu took up the new role of the Catechist for the 4th graders. The effort and time she put in preparing and taking sessions for the kids, surely was an eye-opener.
Last year, as the church tried to reopen, the CCD program was considered pivotal to bring back the community. Apart from ensuring proper guidelines were being followed, the program needed new Catechists. So as Paul and I were discussing the 11th grade, I volunteered to take up the role.
I believe that the role of the Catechists, especially us who teach the high-schoolers have to an additional responsibility to help prepare our wards for the future that awaits them. Learning about Christian faith, is one thing, but leading and living the life as a Christian, requires a lot of sacrifice.
I am thrilled to partner with Jeff – who I might add is one of the coolest teachers I have seen in action. Hoping to learn from one of the best and provide the best of the guidance to our youth.
Sarika teaches Grade 2.
My name is Sarika Paul. I have been a member of this church for 11 years. I live with my husband, Praveen and two sons in Billerica, MA. I work as a web developer at an eCommerce services company in Burlington, MA.
Never been a catechist and never wanted to be one. I was always inspired to do something more and give back to the community when I saw my spouse being so active in church.
But inspirations were short lived. It dies down when I think of the responsibilities that come with any commitments.
Last summer Paul Joseph, CCD director messaged me about the teaching opportunity and I was confused. I got thrilled to know I was contacted for the opportunity but at the same time wasn't sure if I could do it. My usual response would have been a No with a hundred excuses to back it up but I said yes with a clause that I would like to teach in a smaller grade. My human rationale convinced me I am already a catechist at home leading my kids in the way of faith. And my spiritual rationale convinced me it is a calling to serve the community and be close to God.
Fast forwarding to CCD days... I teach second graders along with Jenson Kaithamattam. My second graders are not just chirpy, fun loving little ladies and gentlemen, but they are also very vocal in expressing their opinion of the bible stories and how God could have acted on time to save us from all the trouble. When we were discussing the story of Adam & Eve and how they got expelled from paradise, there were a lot of ideas around how God could have stopped Satan from tempting Eve, Or even better, don't plant the tree of good and evil in the garden! Jenson and I had a hard time convincing them it was all in the plan and God wanted us to pick good over evil and be responsible for our acts. I am constantly amazed to see the energy and enthusiasm in them when we discuss Jesus, his preaching and how to lead a holy life. In the last class I received a big reward from one of the kids in my class - a holler we are the best teachers ever! Little he knew that he made my day by that comment out of his excitement and joy! For those curious minds out there thinking what we did to get this acknowledgement - of course! We were handing out candies to all kids as a prize for the awesome performance in mid term exams :) Still, it counts!!!
I must admit it is a big responsibility and challenge to be a catechist. It demands additional time from your already busy life not just to take class and help kids attend mass with reverence, but also prepare for the class, communicate the class summary to parents and above all pray for each kid in your class. It may sound overwhelming but now it is part of my life and I enjoy doing.
Dear readers, if you also have that feeling of 'giving back to the community' in you but not having enough courage to say yes. Don't think too much, take the leap of faith. If I can do it, you can too. God bless!
Sherin teaches Grade 5.
My name is Sherin Tresa. I have been part of the SMCB community for almost 10 years. I live in Hopkinton with my husband Manesh and children - Angeline & Aiden.
This is my very first experience in teaching. Being able to work with children and teach them about God is great.
From every class, I’m getting more knowledge about faith and getting deeper. I’m still learning how to interest children in the subject. The most enjoyable part is the students. I’m really happy that I got an opportunity to give back to my community.
Tiya teaches Grade 1.
My name is Tiya Maria Joseph and I am a 1st Grade CCD teacher. This is my 2nd year as a CCD teacher. I have been a member of this church for almost 10 years. I live in Shrewsbury with my husband Joseph and 3 kids Joanne, Jianna and Jonathan.
I grew up seeing my dad as a CCD teacher for many years. He is my inspiration and I always wanted to contribute to the CCD program in our Parish in one way or other.
Even though I love teaching, I was never confident that I would be able to do that. I joined the CCD program as a Pre-K assistant teacher in 2016 and it turned out to be an amazing experience. I had to take a break the next year and couldn’t continue for the next few years. When Paul asked about taking up the role again this year, there were no second thoughts.
There were a lot of uncertainties because of Covid but by God’s grace we were able to start the in person CCD program this year. And I am glad to be part of the program and is looking forward to it.
