In this article I will be analyzing the passage of Jesus and the samaritan woman. This passage can be found in the Bible in John 4 1:39. This passage is about Jesus stopping at Samaria on his journey from Judea to Galilee. During his time in Samaria, he fills the Samaritan woman and others with faith in him. Before we analyze the passage, we need to know the history of Samaria and its people.
Samaria, which is known as shomron in Hebrew and means “watch mountain/tower”, is the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel. In the days of Christ, the Jews and Samaritans had a strained relationship because of deep rooted prejudices. The people of Samaria were second class citizens and are mentioned positively in the New Testament.
The significance of the Samaritan woman at the well is that she is never named and yet she has the longest encounter with Jesus than any other person in the gospel of St. John. In Samaritan society, women are both demeaned and disregarded but not only does she encounter Christ but she receives eternal salvation. She also convinces the entire town with her testimony of Jesus. When Jesus first asks the woman to get him a drink, she asks him how a Jew could ask a Samaritan woman for a drink. The woman says this because of the toxic relationship between Samaritans and Jews.
Jesus responds saying that if she knew he was the son of God then she should get the drink because if the woman asked God, he would give her a drink. Jesus then tells the woman that whoever drinks his water shall never thirst for the rest of their life. The woman starts believing Jesus when he suddenly knows everything about her and how she has had five husbands. The woman then left her water jar, went into the town and announced that she had met a man who told her everything she had ever done.
This passage has an impact on Christianity by defining many things that God has done for us and what we should do as his children. Jesus explains to the Woman and us through the Bible that God would be willing to help us and give us water if we ask for it. The passage also shows the spreading of God's word. Once the Woman has gained faith, she runs throughout town spreading the word of God and telling others about the Messiah like how disciples would. The passage basically tells the reader how much God loves us and how we ourselves can be better Christians.
