It is with immense gratitude that I look back at the early years of our SMCB community. I was introduced to this community by my husband. My early memories of participating in the Syro Malabar Mass in Boston dates back to 2003-2004 at the Fernald Chapel. I have very fond memories of attending the St. Thomas Perunnal at St. Jude’s Parish, Waltham in 2006 with Cardinal Sean O’Malley celebrating Mass.
Growing up in Delhi, the church community was a big part of my life. The parish community was my extended family. In the early years of our marriage, we would go to the local Latin parish but I always felt the vacuum of a nurturing church community that I had experienced while growing up.
It was a beautiful Spring day in 2009 when Vadana Achan came to visit us at our home. He shared with us about the budding Syro Malabar community and encouraged us to join the St. Thomas Church. I remember my parents were also home when Vadana Achan visited us and this was a topic very dear to their hearts.
They believed it was very important to raise children instilling the faith of our forefathers and encouraged us to do the same. So, the following Sunday, we went to St. Thomas Church in Framingham and I remember my Papa saying to me: “Mole, it is up to you now - to start worshipping here and becoming part of this community.” SMCB had really grown to become a vibrant worshipping community. Since that Sunday in 2009, we have been coming to this church regularly.
After a few months, Johnson Job, our CCD Director asked me to teach. I agreed, thinking that it would be a great opportunity to help build up the next generation in the faith of our ancestors. Of course, it would also be fun being with the little ones. Then I found out, he wanted me to teach the 3rd grade which was the First communion class. I felt apprehensive at first. I was assured that I would be supporting Paul Ignatius, who had been teaching the class for many years and was well versed in the subject.
So, I started “teaching” CCD since then but I must admit I was really “learning” for many years. I am truly grateful to have learnt from our Vicars, visiting Priests, Paul Ignatius, Chinnama Mathew, Treesa Don, Joseph Kunnel and all of my fellow teachers and students. I taught the 3rd grade for 9 years.
It was a very rewarding and enriching experience preparing our children to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Since 2019, I have been teaching the 11th grade. These are the same students I taught in 3rd grade and its wonderful watching them all grow up into young adults.
I have been blessed to worship at St. Thomas Churches wherever I am. Growing up, our parish was St. Thomas Church in Delhi. Our family church in Kerala is St. Thomas Church. The first Church I went to when I came to the US – was St. Thomas Church in New York. I moved to Boston in 1999 and my Lord in his providence, had planned the St. Thomas Church. I went to Ireland for a visit and there was a St. Thomas Church just in walking distance from where we stayed.
When I look back, I see God’s grace and wisdom in everything. My heart overflows with thanks to God. May our Good Lord bless us all with His grace to impart the faith that St. Thomas shared with us to our future generations. May we all bloom in our faith, according to His plan in this very land that He planted us. Saint Thomas, our patron – pray that we love and serve our Lord with the same fervor and faith you had. Amen.
