Over the years, Marian Mothers group has played a nurturing role within our community. From leading community initiatives to preparing meals for SMCB feasts and decorating the church altar, this group of women continue to foster Christian fellowship within and outside SMCB. Alice Kutticherry writes about the initial years and some of the outreach initiatives of Marian Mothers.
Marian Mothers was founded in 2015, with the guidance and blessings of Fr. Mathew Pothalil.
Among the founders of this group were Alice Kutticherry, Alice Sebastian, Chinnamma Mathew, Elsie Vithayathil, Laly Thomas, Lily Fernandez, Omana Chacko and Rosily Varghese. Now there are more than 40 members in this group.
Rosily George tenderly led the group through the first year. Then came Omana Chacko adding her own unique tradition of Marian devotions; she would lead a rosary group every Sunday in the rectory chapel. Before long, donations started pouring in from members toward building up a monetary pool to help the poor and the needy. Two people in Kerala got help for building a home. Two others were sponsored in paying off their bills at the hospital for a much needed surgery. Vivid example of a generous donor giving away $2400.00 a year has been a shining beacon on our Marian horizon. Grace Pullattu started a study group to delve into the Word of God. Alice Kutticherry took over the reins from Omana Chacko as she, with Rosily, Lily Fernandez and Alice Sebastian ventured into fresh challenges for the Lord trying their magic with flowers to grace the altar.
In this transitional era, we still continue to sponsor periodic dinners for the homeless women at Mother Theresa's in Dorchester. Taking our lesson from mother Mary and Joseph, we welcome Jesus into our midst, listen to Him, speak with Him, guard Him, protect Him and in this way change the world around us.
