Dear Readers,
In the past few weeks, we've been terribly heartbroken by the loss of innocent lives. From Ukraine to Uvalde and many in between, war is everywhere in some form or the other. Today, we are remembering the innocent victims and their families, May they have the grace and strength to carry on.
Let us be reminded about our dads and father figures in our lives, through Stephen Achan's message. The May Spotlight was of course on the brand new batch of first communicants. The Parish celebrated Mother's Day, Nurses Day and the CCD graduation during the past month. Grade 6 provides a quick guide to the Syro-Malabar liturgical calendar. Read about the SMCC initiatives in this edition. For the summer catch, you will find tips in this edition to give the dish the Angamaly twist.

According to the calendar, Father’s Day is on June 19, 2022. Why do we celebrate certain significant days in our life such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day? Every significant day has its own history, and truth. Since we are getting ready to celebrate Father's Day let me share a piece of the history of Father’s Day.
According to history, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd is the founder of Father’s Day. She lost her mother during the birth of her sixth sibling, and she was taken care of by her widowed father. So, she decided that since Mother’s Day was established in 1908, there should be an equivalent holiday for remembering fathers. Her first step was visiting local Churches then she worked with YMCA as well as government officials to get support and approval for Father’s Day. As a result of her hard work Sonora found success and the celebration of Father’s Day was established on June 19, 1910, at Washington.
What is the Significance of Celebrating Father’s Day Today?
The above-mentioned emotional attachment is an eyeopener for today. As the world is growing with advanced technology, our relationships with family, society, and church have also become automated. We are becoming a society with a culture of usage. If my father becomes a burden for my culture, he would be thrown as an object somewhere. In the book of Sirach 3: 8, “Honor your father in everything you do and say, so that you may receive his blessings”. We should keep these words in our mind as mediation, everyone should decide to rejoice on this year’s Father's Day. Is it simply greeting with cards? Do we take them to restaurants? Give them a day to spend on the golf course? Do we purchase a special gift for them? OR are you ready to be a special gift in their lives forever?
On May 21, 2022, 4 children in the SMCB community received the sacrament of Solemn Holy Communion. In this feature, we introduce the 4 communicants to you and more importantly, what communion means to them and their favorite moments of the day.
The teachers of the communion class - Sr. Lincy Sebastian and Tresa Francis, played a central role in the year long preparation for the much awaited First Holy Communion for the children and their families. They taught and guided the communicants to learn prayers and stories from the Bible to prepare them to have their first ever experience of Jesus!
On May 14th, members of the SMCB community volunteered to take part in the annual spring cleaning activity at the church premises. The Marian Unit members planted flowering plants in the church premises. Thanks to everyone who helped with these activities!
Migi Mechery dedicates this Angamaly Fish and Mango curry to her mother who turned 75 recently! She fondly remembers this dish as a favourite with everyone who visited their home. Migi also shares a healthy sprouted bean recipe which goes well with the curry.
Migi is from Angamaly and her biggest influence in cooking is her mother. She loves to recreate her mom's recipes and sharing with her kids. However, she is quick to note that she did not enjoy cooking when she was younger!
Migi lives in Auburn, MA with her husband, Louis Mechery, and 2 children, Andrea and Ryan. She is a registered nurse at UMass Medical in Worcester.
The Syro-Malabar liturgical calendar is divided into 9 seasons, starting with Annunciation and ending with Dedication of the Church. Grade 6 provides a quick guide to the liturgical seasons as part of their final project.
