In the fifth grade, we study the Old Testament. We asked the 5th graders to summarize any passage from the Old Testament that we covered in class this year. The 5th graders also provided a personal reflection of the passage and how it applies to their lives.

Bible Passage: After the Israelites were liberated from Egypt they were heading into the promised land of Canaan. They kept on defying God and God punished them, no matter what the Israelites did to Moses, Moses still prayed to God and asked him to forgive them. Soon Moses died and God appointed Joshua to be the new leader. With Joshua's faith and God's strength and courage he led the Israelites to victory and soon led them to the promised land, Canaan.
Reflection: This relates to my life because it shows that being faithful to God even going into the desert for a long time you should still follow him and He will lead you to something great, in the Israelites case the promised land of Canaan. The Israelites went on a great pilgrimage to the promised land we too are on a voyage to be with God and going to the heavenly Jerusalem by praying and following Him.
Bible Passage: Genesis chapter 7 begins with the Lord acknowledging the righteousness of Noah in his generation. During Noah's time, there were so many wicked people who were not pleasing God. As a result, God commanded a flood of his own, a literal one, in which all the people on Earth would perish. But God wanted to save Noah and his family from this natural disaster.
In Genesis 7:2–3, God commanded Noah : “Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.” He also told Noah that 7 days from then he will bring rain down from the Earth for 40 days and 40 nights and he will wipe out every moving creature out from the surface of the earth. Noah did what the Lord commanded him and built the ark to transport them to a safer place.
Reflection: I can relate to Noah's obedience; he had a very big order that needed to be fulfilled and it was not easy. I personally can relate this to the countless times I had to do chores and take care of my younger sibling without a say in it. I do this because I love and trust my parents and I know they will ask me to do what is right. Just like my parents, God also wants me to trust in him and be obedient to his will. Lord told Noah to take pairs of clean and unclean animals into the Ark.
I can relate to Church as the ark. We have many different types of people who come and attend Mass. The Church never judges them for whatever they have done wrong but helps them to save them from their sin and encourage them to be Good Christians. Just as the ark saved Noah and his relatives from destruction, Church is the symbol of Noah’s ark by which we are saved.
Bible Passage: In the Old Testament there is a story called: “The Golden Calf.” This article summarizes that Moses one day took a long time to come down from the mountain, so the Israelites asked Aaron to make another God for them. He took all the Gold the Israelites had and made it into a Golden Calf on which they worshiped and praised.
God told Moses that they were doing the opposite of what God told them to do, so run down and God will punish them. Moses reminds God of what he promised him (he will have many descendants and he will give them the land of Canaan) so God agreed that he will not punish the Israelites.
Moses ran down and saw the Israelites dancing with the Golden Calf. He took the Golden Calf, burned it, grounded it into pieces, scattered it into the water and made the Israelites drink it. Moses was angered and asked Aaron what he did. Aaron told him the truth so Moses asked all the Israelites who believe in God. Some came forward. Moses told them to kill anyone who didn't have true faith in God so they did just that. Moses said that they will be blessed abundantly.
Reflection: I can relate to this when people believe in things other than God. They might say convincing things on why I should believe in that thing, but I disagree. I know that I should believe in the one and true God, our God.
I can also relate when God was about to punish them. I sometimes get punished for things and I totally get why. I did something wrong so I earned it. But, like when Moses convinces God not to punish the Israelites when they commit Idolatry, I pray to God to forgive my sins. To have mercy on me. I know that once we confess, God will put our sins into the deepest part of the ocean.
Bible Passage: Exodus chapter 12 verses 37 onwards is the story of a 40 year journey from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. Moses and the Israelites were just starting the long journey to Canaan, the promised land. God gave Moses a staff to use on the way. He used it to divide the sea so only him and the Israelites could go through the sea and drown many Egyptians who were trying to chase them.
Another thing Moses did with his staff was when the Israelites were so thirsty and started to complain, he tapped his staff on a rock following God’s command and water started pouring out of the rock. The Israelites started to get pots to fill water for their daily needs. Along the way they were getting food and shelter from God.
Reflection: This story reflects God’s grace on His people. We as Catholics are the people of God. Like the Israelites, God’s grace and protection is with me every step of my life. I have very good family and friends at school and church, who are loyal, kind, and caring. With God, everything is possible (Mathew 19:26; Luke 1:37)
