As part of 7th grade CCD program, the students learnt about the 10 commandments. They explain the Concepts, Attitudes and Habits that have to be developed through learning the commandments. This project displays the understanding of our students on commandments. Hope this project will give an insight to all of you, based on what they have understood about the commandments.
The first commandment means that we must believe in one God alone. We should put nothing before God. The central message of this Commandment is that we should not worship false gods and idols. The first commandment prohibits us from worshipping gods other than the Lord. Idolatry is the sin of worshiping persons or creatures instead of God, considering them as God. The inner meaning of the commandment is you should not have anything before God, that can be possessions, desires, goals or even people that we treat as more important than the true God. We are obliged to love God in response to His love. Jesus said that "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Matthew 4:10
“Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
The devil transported Jesus to the top of a great mountain and offered Him control of the world to Jesus if He agrees to worship him. In this verse Jesus rejects this temptation. Through this, Jesus teaches us the importance of worshiping God. We must overcome the temptations to worship any other object than God. Only then can we keep the first Commandment.
The second commandment: You shall not take the Lord your God’s name, forbids every improper use of God’s name. The second commandment means that we should understand the fact that God’s name should be used respectfully because it implies God's very presence. God can not be contained inside a name, he shouldn’t be limited to it because he is God. When we praise, honor and respect God’s name we are praising God himself. We should respect all objects, places, or people related to God, using the name God, Jesus, Mary and the Saints in an offensive way is blasphemy, which is a grave sin. We should also remember our Christian name that we are given during the sacrament of baptism.
It is stated in the Bible “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one (Mt. 5:33-37). This is relatable to the 2nd commandment because it illustrates a situation where you respect God's name. Whenever you take any oath, you shouldn't bear false witness because that is equivalent to disrespecting, and dishonoring God and God's name. In addition it is also implied to the 8th commandment.
In life you will face many situations in which it is up to you to choose what is right and just. For example you may hear many people curse when they become angry, you shouldn’t curse. Also when you have done something wrong, you shouldn’t lie, rather confess what you did and try not to do it again. When taking the Bible use it with respect, doing it properly, and don’t treat it like any other book, because the Bible is God’s word.
The 3rd commandment tells us to keep the lord’s day holy. It says not to spend the Lord’s day on trivial things.
It means to attend mass at least on Sundays. It means to spend the day in a sacred way, spend time with God in prayer, help and serve others, and not misusing that day. The people of the Old Testament celebrated Sabbath on the last day of the week. They celebrated Sabbath remembering how God completed His work of creation within 6 days and rested on the 7th day. Instead of living the 3rd commandment in its literal form, he healed people on the Sabbath day and thus proved that doing good is suitable to the spirit of the Sabbath and allowed on the Sabbath day. Thus, Jesus corrected the wrong notion about the Sabbath.
As we read in the New Testament in Luke 4:16 and in Acts 17:1-2, on the Sabbath day Jesus read the scriptures in the synagogue of his town Nazareth. In the book of Acts, Paul read the scriptures in the synagogue at Thessalonica spending time in a sacred way.
In our daily life we can go to the church on Sundays and the days of obligation. We can read the bible and be thankful to God for all his blessings. We can be prayerful and lessen the amount of disobedience and indulging in unholy things. We can do charity and other generous deeds without expectation.

We all heard the term “honor your father and your mother” but what does that mean? In the ten commandments we see that it (obviously) means to respect your parents and obey them. However what does it mean figuratively? It means that we and our guardians have many tasks that we must perform for each other. The children must respect and obey their parents. However, the parents also have some responsibilities of their own. The adults need to treat their children properly and bring them up according to God. They must not anger them or spoil them.
Here are a number of events in the Bible that feature this commandment. In John 2:11 we see how Jesus performed his first miracle turning water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana. However he didn’t want to, it wasn't his time to do so, but he still did because Mary wanted him to. We must not disrespect our parents or our elders. We instead must treat them with respect and reverence and love them with all our heart. Jesus showed this when he changed his plans for Mary’s sake. Parents deserve no less than the most love from you. They are your first teachers and the ones that brought you into this world. They are the ones that helped you along for the first few challenges. We must treat them with our utmost respect and pay their love forward by caring for them properly when they become old and decrepit.
This commandment can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. You can help your parents around the house or obey their orders. Don't test their patience, or question their authority, after all, they only want the best for you! We must respect them and listen to their advice and their words. We just need to treat them with respect and obedience as we are children, and care for them when they are old. Not only our parents but our elders, guardians, teachers, and protectors. We must all treat them with the same appreciation and politeness as we show our father and mother.
Jesus told us that this commandment is broken not only if you kill someone but if you also are angry with someone and if you have any thoughts or desires to hurt them in any way is also a sin. The fifth commandment helps us recognize the dangers of life and helps us to avoid them.
Jesus Talks about the 5th commandment (Matthew 5:21)
“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgement. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa’, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘ you fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
Jesus gives us new meanings to the 5th commandment that we should follow to reach eternal life. We shouldn't be angry with someone or think angrily towards someone, we should just forgive them for whatever they did.
What does this commandment mean?
The 7th commandment basically means that you should not take things that are not yours. Stealing is a grave sin among social evils. And because of that, the commandment 'You shall not steal' is related to social justice. This commandment tells us that we don’t have the right to violate the rights of others. If we do, it is considered stealing. For example, if you go to a restaurant and you don't pay the bill even though the employees provided you with the food you need, that means that you are stealing money from the owner of the restaurant and you are not doing your duty (you are violating his/her rights). Not only does this commandment tell us not to steal, but it also tells us that we have the responsibility to protect others’ rights. Another example of stealing is plagiarism. In this situation, you are stealing the answers of another student.
Where can we find this commandment in the Bible?
There are many scenarios where the 7th commandment comes into place in the Bible. One reference is in Ephesians 4:28. The Bible clearly states that, “The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with one in need.” This shows that we should not steal and that we are destroying someone’s personal freedom. We have to put in hard work to have our own things and we have to be able to share that with someone who might need it
How can we follow this commandment in our daily life?
We can easily follow this in our daily lives! If you have stolen something from someone, it is your duty to give it back and we have to apologize. If you happen to be on the other side of this situation, it is your duty to forgive that person just like Jesus does. We can also follow this commandment by respecting people's rights and doing your part. We need to give justice to those who need it. The basic principle of justice is to give what one owes to another. Jesus desires that the basis of our sense of justice should be love and fraternity. That is what we see in the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan gave justice to the man who was robbed and wounded. It is also our duty to share our wealth and use it in the right ways. St. Paul says that: “Thieves, the greedy drunkards, revilers, robbers none of these will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor 6:10). This teaching of St. Paul shows the importance of keeping this commandment.
This concludes my writing on the 7th commandment. I hope you can take away some basic facts from my writing! Thank you
The commandment I will be explaining is the eighth commandment, “Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor”. The literal meaning is don’t lie to anyone, but it goes deeper than that. God gave us the commandments to follow, so not following them would be disrespecting God. Bearing false witness is lying and lying is bad. The inner meaning is to be true to yourself.
People lie to themselves a lot without knowing it. You can lie about school, work, and many other things. You can follow this commandment in day-to-day life by trying to not lie to yourself or other people. Try to be honest to everyone such as your teachers, parents, and peers. A few forms of lying include flattery, and denial.
Flattery is using lying to get what you want in a bad way. For example, someone may tell someone something nice so that they get something in return.
Denial is denying the truth. Such as if you didn’t accept the fact that you got a bad test score. “Thou shalt do no murder, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, honor thy mother and father, and thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”(Mathew 19:18). Many other prophets and disciples have stated this throughout the bible.
The 10th commandment states that you shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. It means that you should not be jealous or in other words desire what someone else has. You should be grateful for everything that you are given and remember that you are blessed to have these things. Luke chapter 12 verses 15 states, Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions”.
This means that you should be happy with what you have and you should not be greedy or long for what others have. Life doesn’t rely on possessions to live.
