When young Angela decided to live a vowed life of a religious sister, she held onto the Call of Jeremiah.
The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
It was on 12th October, 1974, Rosa Venerini’s charism "Educate to Set Free" was brought to India. The congregation’s mission in India started small with the Bishop of Calicut welcoming the Venerini sisters to the diocese. Nearly 3 decades after the launch in Calicut, Sister Angela joined the Venerini convent in Cheruvannur, Calicut. The next 6 years was the time of formation, which was spent mostly in Kerala. In between, she went to Orissa for her postulancy which lasted 8 months. After the 4 year period, she entered the Novitiate.
Soon after, Sister Angela decided to attend midwifery training. This was in Kattappana, Idukki. During this time, she helped out in the local hospital in the evenings. With this experience, she was sent to Orissa to assist in the upliftment of women collaborating with the Mahila Samaj. She was involved in social work, working with leprosy patients as well. During this time, she also took the role of accountant at the local school. There, Sister Angela decided to change gears and pursued a BA in Social studies through IGNOU.
Her stint in Orissa ended in 2005, after which she spent 2 years in Uttar Pradesh. In 2007, Sister moved to Mysore to study Theology and by the end of the year, she took her final vows.
Phillipians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me
Along with another sister, Sister Angela helped establish the village school and took upon the role of headmistress. When she met Sister Lincy later here, they would exchange stories about this village they hold so dear in their hearts. Sister Lincy worked in the same village for many years. But their paths would cross only much later. As Sister Angela grew more involved in her role at the school, she decided to pursue a degree in education(B.Ed).
In 2011, she was called to begin a new community in Chembur, Trivandrum. She started teaching in the Loyola school and was involved in pastoral work with the local Parish community.
In September 2012, Sister Angela came to America to serve the needs of the Venerini academy in Worcester. The sisters' presence in the school had been waning. Sister Angela settled in quickly in her new surroundings. She took on the role of teaching religion to Grades 6 and 7, at the academy. After her morning school duties, she returns every day to take care of the older sisters at the Venerini convent, whom she calls affectionately as her mothers.
Sister Angela enjoys gardening and baking. She loves baking a cake for birthdays at the convent and special treats for Christmas. See some of her sweet creations below!
She is also a CCD teacher for Grade 5. Over the past summer, Sr. Lincy and Sr. Angela started visiting SMCB families in a spirit of sharing and being there for our families during the pandemic.
