The Syro Malabar Catholic Congress (SMCC) unit in Boston has been active since the inception of our church. Many activities were held by Syro Malabar Catholic Congress to support and nourish our community in spirituality with guidance from our religious leaders. The national unit is located in Chicago, led by our spiritual leader, Bishop Angadiath, and the national committee members are elected from all over the US. Elsy Vithayathil, a member of the National Committee, is our parish representative.
At first, the Boston unit supported the parish by arranging preachers for our yearly retreat. Then, we initiated piano lessons for our community at a very affordable monthly rate. This benefited our children greatly. We had also started dance classes for our children, which were conducted after the Sunday mass in the church basement. This helped many tiny tots begin their first steps of dance on stage. The first dance teacher was Jefiya, who was a high school student from our community, followed by many other professional dance teachers. Another endeavor was teaching Malayalam to our kids under SMCC leadership on Sundays. Malayalam classes started as volunteer opportunities for our community members who helped many parents fulfill their dreams of teaching their children Malayalam in the US.
In previous years, SMCC led the way of the cross during the lent season, Rosary in the month of October, etc. These were just some of the activities our unit used to do to grow our faith and participation in community development. Pesaha pal on Maundy Thursday was prepared traditionally by SMCC as well, it was helpful for the parish council to focus on other activities during Holy Week. To encourage our youth, SMCC used to present a cash award to the highest GPA student from our community as well.
SMCC celebrated the Indian Independence day and organized many cultural activities as well as indoor and outdoor games. SMCC would host the cookout lunch on the day of celebration as well. The Annual day celebration of 2019 was especially memorable when the team conducted the best family singing competition. The winning family was the family of Tony and Jeena Loyd.
Decoration of the parish Altar was another initiative organized by the SMCC Boston unit during the pandemic, which supported the activities of our liturgical group. The SMCC Boston unit is always eager to help our community grow together spiritually.
Due to Covid -19 pandemic, SMCC was not able to conduct any activities during the last two years. We bring you pictures and videos of activities in the years prior to this period.
