I am a nurse, but I do not consider myself as a healthcare hero. My work does not involve direct patient care. That said, I have witnessed first hand many healthcare professionals, who were asked to work without adequate Personal Protective Equipment [PPE]. PPEs are essential to treat patients with infectious diseases. It was disheartening to constantly update policies, since we did not have adequate PPEs. Policies such as reusing face masks, using them for a longer time, is not something we have ever done, especially in USA.
Many of the healthcare professionals told me they felt like a soldier going off to battle, without proper equipment and leaving their families behind. But the fear, anxiety or misinformation regarding COVID-19, did not stop their dedication to providing high quality patient care.
Our healthcare professionals would rather appreciate the love, support positivity and prayers from our community, than sympathy.
